Remember The Munsters?

We were the Munster family this weekend, as we visited the Basel Münster.  According to Willem, it is a very old, old, old, old, old church.  Turns out he's right -- it was built between 1019 and 1500.  Landon's class took a field trip to the Münster on Monday, and Landon was very eager to take us on our own field trip there.  The stained glass is beautiful artwork, and I loved the colorful tile design on the roof.  We were able to climb to the top of one of the towers.  Not for anyone that is claustrophobic, fearful of heights or wider than a breadbox.  But the view is worth it!

This weekend we also visited a park in Riehen, just north of the main city center.  Many animals native to the area live in the park (Lange Erlen) such as deer, rabbits, wild pigs and sheep.  The kids enjoyed seeing the animals, and we had lunch at the park restaurant and a carousel ride.  The carousel was also very old, old, old -- it was from 1895.

So overall, a fun and busy weekend.  I feel like we could have something new to do every weekend over the next couple of years.  We're starting to keep a list of the places we would like to explore while we're here.  It's still comforting to see signs of home too.  We've already seen a few Red Sox shirts, and I'm somewhat surprised to see so many familiar kids characters like Lightning McQueen and Spiderman.  Crocs seem to be just as popular here as in the US.  And I went to an IKEA this week that looked exactly like the one in Mass. that I occasionally visited, except with both Swedish and German languages.

Bis später! Auf wiedersehen!  ("See you later!  Goodbye!")
