We have had what seems like more days off this spring. Compared side-by-side, the Basel public holidays are comparable in number to US public holidays. But since we're not used to getting some of the religious holidays off in the spring, it feels like we have more long weekends. Last weekend was Ascension; Thursday and Friday were public holidays. Today is "Pfingst Monday" or "Whit Monday", otherwise known as Pentecost. Both holidays are based on Easter timing. One note on non-religious holidays: although Mother's Day is celebrated here in Switzerland (Muttertag), there is no observed Father's Day or Vatertag. Hmmm. We will still celebrate as a family on June 19.
Anyway, it's a good time to use these extra holidays for short trips. Today, we took a trip to the Swiss Transportation Museum in Lucerne. Landon is working on an upcoming school presentation about what profession he would like to pursue and we thought the museum would be a good spot for research. He has chosen a train engineer, so we had him taking notes about driving trains at the museum.
The extra daylight here also makes this time of year enjoyable. The sun is setting around 9:30 pm now, so we love to spend time after dinner outside. And we're preparing for our summer holiday home leave to the US at the end of this month. Summer school holidays are only 6 weeks long, so school starts again on August 15. (This is because most vacations throughout the year are 2 weeks at a time, and there is an autumn break as well.) We're excited to see family and friends for a much anticipated visit.
