It's October here, which means excitement is in the air for our family. Birthdays are approaching for the kids, so there is a countdown until cupcakes, parties, presents and celebrations. One way that we plan to celebrate is to bring in cupcakes for the class at school. Homemade treats at school, although they must be peanut-free, are acceptable. And homemade cakes seem more prevalent here -- I did find a source for canned frosting, in case my recipe for frosting disappoints. The kids' birthday parties with friends seem similar to what we would see in the U.S. Face painting, balloons and games are popular, and of course, the goody bag with treats can really "make" a party.
I thought I'd share a game that we recently discovered at a birthday party, because it can be hard to find a game that keeps 10 four-year olds happy at once. This is perfect for the 3-6 year old age bracket, and is very popular in Britain. It's called "Pass the Parcel". To prepare, wrap a small-ish prize. Then, add another layer of paper with a treat in between the layers of wrapping paper. Continue this pattern so that there are as many layers as guests. The game is played by having everyone sit in a circle, and the children pass the parcel around the circle until the music stops (such as in "musical chairs"). When the music stops, the person who has the parcel gets to unwrap the wrapping paper and gets the treat that was uncovered in this layer. This continues until the last person unwraps to find the final prize in the middle. Everyone gets a prize, and everyone gets to do some unwrapping! Brilliant!
We're also very excited because we have vacation plans for next week. We're meeting my parents in the Andalucia region of Spain -- it will be great to spend time with family and explore the area. We'll be sure to post details when we get back. Adios!
