Today is the first day of school! Landon starts his second year of kindergarten (two years are mandatory here in Switzerland). Willem is in his last year of preschool. We are grateful that this year provides the kids with some continuity -- both the school and the teachers are the same. We are all excited to get back into routine, but we're not yet ready to say goodbye to summer.
It's still just mid-August, so we can enjoy the public pools in the Basel area for another few weeks. These seem to be a top-destination for families during the summer. July and August have not been all that cooperative for outdoor pools; the weather has been more autumn-like, with occasional hot days. However, we have had the chance to visit a few and they are absolutely worth a visit. There are often pools for everyone in the family -- from wading pools to lap pools, and every step in between. I like that the kids have plenty to do at their ability. The water slides are a hit! I am really impressed by the cleanliness and features of the public pools; really, they feel more like a resort. And here's an added bonus: they're cheap! (5CHF entry fee for an adult = ~$6) One word of caution is that lifeguards are hard to find. It is primarily the responsibility of parents to keep constant watch on their children. We're all tired out by the time we leave!
To conquer the last of any summer boredom, Landon attended a Music Camp that was held at his school last week. He learned about percussion, guitar, performing and dancing. He really enjoyed borrowing a guitar to practice strumming at home. And how cool is it that an honest-to-goodness musician teaches the camp? Bettina Schelker is a co-founder of the school and is a singer/songwriter. She has released 5 CD's and we like that the kindergarten and preschool classes have such a strong music influence. Bettina tours in Europe, the U.S., and Australia. Earlier this year, I went to see a show, and she is a very good performer. It was fun to see another side of her after watching her work at school.
